Activities in Slovenia

On October 8, 2022, Physiotherapists Without Borders organized a charity hike on Pohorje, which we named the “Hike with Heart,” for six-year-old David from Velika Polana. Our goal was to raise funds that would help David gain greater independence and make daily life easier.

David's story

David was born three months premature and has faced serious health challenges since birth. As a premature infant he spent several months in the hospital, and was later diagnosed with fourth-degree cerebral palsy. Despite the difficulties, with determination, family support, and regular therapy he made significant progress, from crawling to his first attempts at standing with support. After a demanding SDR surgery that reduces spasticity in his legs, he needed continuous physiotherapy for recovery, which the public healthcare system could not fully provide.

The Hike with Heart

With the “Hike with Heart” event, we wanted to bring people together in an act of solidarity and movement for a good cause. We gathered at the Pohorje cable car and hiked together toward Koča Luka. Participants contributed voluntary donations of 10 euros for adults and 5 euros for children to David’s charity fund.

What the hike funded

With the collected funds we helped finance a special lift that allows David to move independently around the house and reach his room, something that was previously impossible. The purchase of the lift was a significant financial burden for the family, so we were grateful that together we could contribute to a meaningful improvement in their daily life.

The response

The hike exceeded our expectations. It united many individuals, families, and supporters who, with their presence and kindness, showed how strong a community can be when we come together for someone in need.

The “Hike with Heart” was not only a charity event, but a symbol of solidarity, hope, and the understanding that every step matters, both in the mountains and in life.
